Sunset dome scramble

This outing starts in the late afternoon, once the heat has gone out of the day. Your guide picks a gently rounded granite dome west of the main peaks, chosen for its view rather than its difficulty.

The coarse granite grips your shoes, so the walk up the slab takes little effort. You may use your hands now and then for balance, but there are no ropes and no climbing moves.

From the top you watch the Great Spitzkoppe and the Pontoks turn amber, then crimson, then violet as the sun goes down. The descent is guided in the twilight, with headlamps for the last part, as the first stars come out.
